Propecia Generic For Male Pattern Baldness

June 18, 2015

The drug propecia generic was originally intended for treating prostate enlargement or benign prostatic hyperplasia. When its branded name Proscar was released in the market, it was noticed that men who were suffering from androgenic alopecia were also being treated by the drug.  It was then that the manufacturer took notice and created some clinical studies and found out that Proscar, which came at 5mg, which at lowered dosage, particularly 1mg, could help fight androgenic alopecia.  Several years later, the brand Propecia, an offshoot of the drug Proscar was approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a treatment for androgenic alopecia.

Who is propecia generic intended for?

Propecia generic is meant for men suffering from male pattern baldness and want to stop the progression of their hair loss.  Signs of male pattern baldness would be the thinning of hair on the front, the receding of hairline on the temples, and the formation of a bald spot on the crown.  In due time, this type of baldness will let you end up bald from top to front with a rim of hair at the sides and back.  propecia generic is effective against this type of hair loss because it is able to treat it at the root of the cause – the formation of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT).  Basically, this hair loss treatment prevents your hair loss from getting any worse.  If your hair loss is due to androgenic alopecia, then this is the medication for you.  Consult your doctor to know what type of hair loss you are having.

How does it work?

An adult male will usually have an abundance of testosterone hormones.  However, an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase converts this hormone into another hormone called dihydrotestosterone.  What this DHT does to the scalp at high levels is that it gradually thins out the sac of the hair follicles, making the hair follicles produce only thin strands of hair until it can no longer support the growth of hair.  What propecia generic does is that it intervenes with the conversion by inhibiting the 5-alpha reductase, hence the term 5-alpha reductase inhibitor.  This simply means that the DHT levels in the body gets lowered significantly so there is less thinning of the hair follicles.  When this medication is taken continuously for a span of 3-5 months, DHT levels within the body will remain low enough that balding due to the thinning of hair follicles will stop.  Continuous use may even allow hair follicles to recover and grow back hair again.

Are there any side effects?

Propecia generic is actually a very safe medication with hardly any interactions known.  However, there are some who claims of side effects such as rashes, headaches, lowered mental capacity, decreased libido, testicular pain, reduced semen volume, erectile dysfunction, and orgasm issues.  The majority of users though do not report of any incidence of these side effects.  Nevertheless, if you encounter any of them, consult your doctor immediately.  Many of these issues though can be countered using other medications.
